A Silver Spring man has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death last week of Nancy Elizabeth Finch, 32, the Prince George's County librarian whose body was found near a jogging path in the Montgomery County section of the Northwest Branch Park.
Philip Caswell, Montgomery County police spokesman, announced yesterday that Robert Andrew Goodman, 19, of 806 Buckingham Dr., was arrested at his home Wednesday night.
On the night of Oct. 27, Edwin Finch told Prince George's County police that his wife was missing from their home in the 11300 block of Cherry Hill Road in Beltsville, presumably after going out for a late afternoon run in the park. Police searched all night and found her body the next morning lying in a wooded area at the end of Oakview Drive, just over the Montgomery County line. She had been sexually molested, police said.
Finch's murder generated concern and fear among friends and neighbors, who have formed an association to help in the investigation. A memorial service for Finch will be held Saturday at Takoma Presbyterian Church.
Goodman was denied bail by a District Court judge yesterday. A preliminary hearing for the former sheet-metal mechanic will be held later this month.
