A man and a woman found shot to death Tuesday night in an apartment they shared in Falls Church were identified yesterday as Gary Ray Russell, 24, and Rebecca Leigh Kimbro, 19. Falls Church police said they believe both committed suicide.
Police Lt. Gregory D. King said he thinks Russell's unemployment was "quite a factor" in his apparent suicide and that Kimbro apparently then shot herself.
Russell had been out of work since July, according to King, and had been trying to get a job as a truck driver for a paint company, but the job didn't materialize. Kimbro was a night clerk at a hotel in the Tysons Corner area, King said.
Police got a call at 7:59 p.m. Tuesday from a woman who said, "Please help me. My boyfriend just shot himself. I need an ambulance" at the Westbrook Garden Apartments in the 900 block of Ellison Street, King said.
Two police cars were in the area and arrived at the address about a minute later, police said, and as officers were climbing the stairs to the second-floor apartment they heard a shot.
Both bodies were on the floor of the apartment with gunshot wounds in their heads. A .38-caliber pistol was found nearby.
King said police had received no previous calls regarding domestic problems at the apartment.
William and Janet Eppardo, who live next to the apartment Russell and Kimbro occupied, said they heard no arguing from that apartment Tuesday, but did hear a loud thump against the wall about 4:30 p.m. and a loud blast between 7:30 and 8 p.m.
"They never bothered anyone and there were never any disturbances really," Mrs. Eppardo said. Her husband added, "They'd speak to you when you came in or when you went out but other than that we had very little contact."
