The federal government and many area jurisdictions will observe today as the Christmas holiday. All federal offices will be closed except the U.S. Postal Service, which will be open today and closed tomorrow. Mail will be delivered as usual today, but only special delivery, express mail and perishable items will be delivered tomorrow.

Banks will be closed today and tomorrow in the District of Columbia and Virginia. Maryland banks will be open today and closed tomorrow.

Metrobus will operate on a Saturday schedule today and a Sunday schedule tomorrow. Metrorail will operate from 6:30 a.m. to midnight today and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow, with off-peak fares in effect both days. The Silver Spring Ride-On bus system will operate on a Sunday schedule today and tomorrow. The Gaithersburg Ride-On system will not be in operation either day.

All area courts will be closed. All area schools will remain closed until after New Year's.

Fairfax County offices and public libraries will be open half a day today, but state and local offices and public libraries in all other jurisdictions will be closed.

Liquor stores in Montgomery County will operate between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. today. Virginia liquor stores will close at 6 p.m. today. Montgomery County and Virginia liquor stores will be closed tomorrow. There are no special restrictions on hours of D.C. liquor stores; most will be open normal hours today and will be closed tomorrow.

Today's Supercan collections will be made on schedule in Washington. Regular Saturday collections will not be made tomorrow in Rockville or in Fairfax. Parking meter payments will not be required in the District today or tomorrow; enforcement of traffic and parking regulations will vary among other jurisdictions.
