Four area programs will offer free rides home today for motorists who have drunk too much to drive safely.
CareCab (269-7250). It will pick up persons from any public place in the District of Columbia and take them to any residence inside the Capital Beltway. It will operate from 7 p.m. to 3 a.m today, tomorrow and Sunday. Anonymity is promised. A caller need give only first name and last initial, current phone number and location, and destination. The sponsor is Providence Hospital's Care Unit, a division of Comprehensive Care Corp. Capitol Cab is providing the rides.
Dial-a-Ride (469-8424). It will deliver passengers from any public place in Montgomery County to any residence in Montgomery County. It will operate until 7 a.m. tomorrow. Anonymity is promised. A caller need give only first name and last initial, current location and destination. It is sponsored by Montgomery County and a number of organizations. Barwood Cab is providing the rides.
Dial-a-Ride and CareCab have worked out a cooperative arrangement. If someone in Montgomery needs a ride into D.C., connecting rides will be made between Barwood and Capitol cabs. The same holds true for someone in D.C. needing a ride to Montgomery outside the Beltway.
Serenity Club Inc. (360-1111). To qualify for a ride, an individual must have a car. Members of the club will pick up the individual at any public or private place in Northern Virginia and drive his or her car anywhere in Northern Virginia or, in some circumstances, nearby sections of D.C. A caller must provide full name, current location, description of car and destination. The program will operate from noon today through midnight tomorrow.
Sober Ride (522-8750). It will pick up individuals from any public or private place in Arlington County or Georgetown and take them to any residence inside the beltway in Northern Virginia. It operates from 7 tonight through 3 a.m. Monday. Anonymity is promised. A caller need give only first name and last initial, current location and destination. It is sponsored by Arlington County's Alcohol Safety Action Program, the Alcohol Treatment Center of Arlington Hospital and Government Employees Insurance Co. Red Top Cab is providing the rides.
All four programs emphasize that rides will be provided only to people heading home and not to another drinking place.
