Commissioner Mildred Edwards of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 2C headed the ANC's efforts to bring Christmas to the needy. The ANC hosted Christmas parties at two apartment buildings for senior citizens: The Cambridge and Horizon House. In addition, the group contributed funds to other groups for Christmas dinners for the needy.
The ANC also contributed $125 to the Friends of the Watha T. Daniel Library. This grant will be matched by one from the National Home Library Grant Fund to purchase reading materials.
The ANC has two new commissioners: Bob Ebel will fill the vacancy in Single-Member District 2, and Tony Johnson will represent Single-Member District 3.
Applications for landmark status for the Homer Building at 601 13th St. NW and for buildings at 1201-1223 N St. NW and 1310-1316 12th St. NW have won ANC support. The Joint Committee on Landmarks will conduct a hearing on these applications at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 10th-floor conference room at 1325 G St. NW.
The ANC is supporting the following applications before the D.C. Board of Zoning adjustment:
An application by Africare Inc. to use a building in a residential zone at 440 R St. NW as its headquarters; an application by Charles and Anna Vaccaro to add a restaurant to their renovated bakery and delicatessen at Fourth and H streets NW; an application by 4th and G Partnership to use a building at 701 Fourth St. NW as offices for a nonprofit organization; and an application by Mattie Davis to use a building at 1544 Ninth St. NW as a variety store.
The ANC voted to oppose an application by the 1212 Joint Venture to convert a residential building at 1212 Massachusetts Ave. NW to a professional office building. In general, the ANC opposes the depletion of housing stock by converting residences to commercial use.
The ANC is opposing the renewal of a liquor license for the California Steak House at 831 14th St. NW. ANC Chairman Louis R. Perkins said a search of city records disclosed that the establishment is being operated as a sexually oriented business without the necessary certificate of occupancy.
