A 45-year-old Northeast Washington man was fatally injured early yesterday when his auto, being chased by a shopping center security guard, crashed into a bank building on Greenbelt Road, Prince George's County police reported.
Police identified the man as Lawrence Washington Sharp Jr. of 832 5lst St. NE. They said he was pronounced dead at Doctors' Hospital of Prince George's County about an hour after the 4 a.m. incident.
Police said a Beltway Plaza security guard "observed a suspicious car" leaving the rear of the shopping center, tried to stop its driver for questioning and then briefly gave chase in his car on Greenbelt Road before the vehicle crashed into Loyola Federal Savings and Loan at 6329 Greenbelt Rd.
Bank manager Mark Ryder said the car jumped the curb and "went straight into the front of the building." He said the crash demolished the two front doors and left the bank with an "open doorway" and a "lot of curious customers" all day long. Ryder said the bank opened on time yesterday and will be open for business as usual today.
Last night, police could provide no elaboration on the incident and said their investigation was continuing.
