Applications from runners who would like to participate in the third annual D.C. Marathon April 24 are being accepted by the D.C. Department of Recreation.

The 26.2-mile race begins at 8 a.m. on the Mall between Fourth and Seventh streets NW.

The deadline for applications is April 18. That is also the deadline for completed applications for a file-kilometer fun run that will follow the start of the marathon. The fun run is open to persons of all ages.

Marathon runners will compete in several age categories, and individual awards will be given to men and women winners in each age category. There also will be special categories for race walkers and persons in wheelchairs. In addition, the first D.C. resident who finishes will receive the Mayor's Award.

Five or more entrants, who are part of a high school, college, or running club, are eligible to compete for the team award, based on the places of the first three finishers. Team members also may qualify for awards in other categories.

All runners who complete the course will receive a marathon patch and a marathon souvenir program book.

The entry fee is $7 for the marathon and $3 for the fun run. Entry forms for both the marathon and the fun run are available by calling 673-6645, or by writing to: Race Director, D.C. Marathon, D.C. Department of Recreation, 3149 16th St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20010.
