Thomas R. Stanley Sr., 47, a retired employe of the Census Bureau who was active in community affairs, died of cancer Feb. 27 at Doctors' Hospital of Prince George's County.
Mr. Stanley, who lived in Glen Arden, was born in Herlock, Md. He attended the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore, and served in the Air Force from 1954 to 1958.
He moved to the Washington area when he left the service and went to work for the Census Bureau, where he was an electronics technician when he retired in 1982. He then worked for Lockheed Corp.
Mr. Stanley was a Cub Scout leader, the first director of the Glen Arden Youth Services and Referral Bureau, a former president of the Glen Arden Elementary School PTA, and a member of the First Baptist Church of Highland Park.
Survivors include his wife, Idella J. Stanley, of Glen Arden; four daughters, Tamara J. Wheatley and Linda J. Stanley, both of Suitland, Patricia M. Stanley of Cambridge, Md., and Beverly R. Stanley of Glen Arden; three sons, Thomas R. Jr., of Forestville, Md., and Garry L. and Timothy E., both of Glen Arden; his father, Sherman Stanley of Herlock; four sisters, Janice Rouse and Mary E. Stanley, both of Herlock, Brenda Quinn of Greensboro, N.C., and Yvonne Brown of Preston, Md.; two brothers, William E., of Memphis, and Webster A., of Herlock, and seven grandchildren.
