A newborn baby boy was found in a trash dumpster behind a bowling alley in Hyattsville early yesterday morning by a passerby, Prince George's County police reported.

The six-pound baby, who is suffering from hypothermia, was taken to Children's Hospital where he was listed in critical condition last night, according to a hospital official.

Police said the child appeared to be no more than a few hours old when it was found. They said they are searching for the mother of the child because they are concerned that she may be ill and in need of assistance.

The baby was discovered about 6:30 a.m. in a dumpster behind the Rinaldi Bowling Lanes at 2310 Chillum Rd. when a man walking by heard the infant crying, police said.

Donald Morneau, manager of the bowling alley, said he and two other employes saw a four-door, white or gray car "parked out back up near the dumpster where the baby was found" shortly after 2 a.m. as they left the building to get sandwiches after closing up for the night. He said one employe saw a man in the car.

When Morneau returned about 4 a.m., the car was gone, he said.

Police asked that anyone with information on the incident call 967-5607.
