A 40-year-old Talbot County man apparently shot and fatally injured his wife before fatally shooting their 2-year-old son and himself Friday night, Maryland State Police said yesterday.

Police identified the victims as Charles and Jane Hart and their son Christian.

Charles Hart and Christian were pronounced dead inside the Hart home near Cordova. Jane Hart, 37, died at 12:30 p.m. yesterday at the University of Maryland Hospital's Shock Trauma Unit in Baltimore, police said.

State police at the Easton barracks said they received a call about a shooting on Blade Road about 7:30 p.m. Friday. Ambulance drivers arrived at the Pequeno Caballo Farm, two miles north of Cordova, and found Jane Hart lying on the lawn. She was taken to Easton Hospital and later flown to Baltimore where she died.

Police said they were not sure how the wife had been able to leave the house, but said that her husband apparently had barricaded himself and his son in the house shortly before police arrived.

State police called in SWAT team members and a hostage negotiator, but after numerous unsuccessful attempts to contact the husband inside the house, they stormed it about 2:20 a.m. and found the bodies of the father and son, police spokesman Thomas Moore said.

Moore said that no shots were fired during the long wait. He said it will not be known how long the two inside had been dead until after autopsies are completed.

Police said they did not know of a motive for the shootings.
