A Kensington man died of a gunshot wound to the chest Saturday night after he was shot while sitting in his car in the parking lot of a shopping center in Wheaton, Montgomery County police said yesterday.

Police identified the victim as Alan Chavis, 26, of the 3000 block of Findley Road. A police spokesman said Chavis had driven into the parking lot at Wheaton Triangle, a small shopping center opposite Wheaton Plaza, around 9:30 p.m. He was sitting in his parked car when an assailant fired one shot into the vehicle, jumped into a car and sped off, police said.

Chavis was pronounced dead at Holy Cross Hospital at 10:16 p.m. Police have no suspects in the shooting. Kensington Man Shot to Death
