A 17-year-old New Carrollton youth was arrested last night and charged with first-degree murder in the strangulation death this week of 8-year old Brian Zippert, also of New Carrollton.

Brian Zippert, who lived in the Carrollan Gardens apartments at 5446 85th Ave., was reported missing about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and his body was found in a woooded area near his home Thursday morning.

Prince George's County police spokesman Robert Law said police conducted an intensive, 60-hour investigation in which investigators and officers knocked on apartment doors and interviewed motorists who pass through the vicinity of the child's home.

He said that investigators determined that the victim left his home Wednesday night to search for a sister and tell her to return home. The boy apparently was accosted at this time by someone who enticed him to go to the wooded area where he was later strangled, Law said.

Police said they have not yet determined a motive in the death.

Law said the suspect, who he said cannot be identified because of his age, was being held last night in the county detention center in Upper Marlboro pending a hearing Monday.
