Two persons were killed and five others injured in a three-vehicle accident last night in the 400 block of Rhode Island Avenue NE, D.C. police reported.

Police said they arrested Rodney J. Merrill, 26, of 418 Goldleaf Ave., Capitol Heights, and charged him with two counts of manslaughter and one count each of driving while intoxicated, speeding and driving without a permit in connection with the 9 p.m. accident.

The accident occurred, police said, when a car driven by Merrill and traveling southwest on Rhode Island Avenue NE allegedly struck another car that was making a U-turn. Police said this caused the second vehicle to skid into a curb and then overturn into a third car parked in the driveway of a nearby bank.

Killed were two of the occupants of the second car, a 47-year-old Northeast Washington man and his 19-year-old daughter, who were pronounced dead on arrival at the Medstar unit of the Washington Hospital Center, according to police.

The man's wife, who was still undergoing surgery early this morning, was reported in critical condition at the Washington Hospital Center, and a son was listed in serious but stable condition at Howard University Hospital, police said. They declined to release the names of the victims pending notification of next of kin.

The occupants of car that had been parked at the bank, Saiyd Khaalid, 32, and his wife, Soni, 34, of 7124 Kent Town Dr., Landover, were treated at Providence Hospital and released, police said.

Merrill was taken to D.C. General Hospital, where he was treated and released to police custody, officials said.
