Daniel Lawrence Woltz, 17, a Riverdale resident who graduated from Bladensburg Senior High School earlier this month, died June 16 at a hospital in Philipsburg, Pa., of a gunshot wound he received earlier that day.
A spokesman for the Pennsylvania State Police said Mr. Woltz was struck by a bullet from a .22 caliber rifle and that the matter was under investigation. Mr. Woltz was visiting friends and relatives in Pennsylvania and it was understood that he was with a friend when the incident occurred.
Mr. Woltz was born in Washington and was a lifelong resident of the area. For the past four years, he had delivered The Washington Post newspaper in the Rogers Heights area of Riverdale. Until The Washington Star closed in August, 1981, Mr. Woltz and a brother, David, also delivered that paper. In December 1980, the brothers were named "Carriers of the Month" by the Star.
He was a member of the Vocational Industrial Club of America, played soccer with the Bladensburg-Edmonston Boys Club and was an ice skater.
In addition to his brother, of Riverdale, survivors include his parents, Lawrence R. and Marguerite (Peggy) Woltz, another brother, Buddy, and two sisters, Virginia (Ginny) and Elizabeth (Beth), all of Riverdale, and his grandparents, Edward and Marguerite Fowler of Spartansburg, S.C., and Lawrence and Margaret Woltz of College Park.
