A knife-wielding Washington man, who allegedly chased one woman around the parking lot of an Oxon Hill liquor store and then attacked another in a parked car, was shot and killed Friday night by an off-duty police officer, according to Prince George's County police.

Police say off-duty Prince George's officer Joseph L. Neal was driving by Top's Liquors, 4422 Wheeler Rd., when he saw a man with a knife chasing a woman around the parking lot. Neal and Shawn Taffe, another off-duty Prince George's officer who worked as a security guard at the store, identified themselves as police officers and chased the suspect.

The man, identified as Dwayne Lee Dupree, 22, of 3700 Ninth St. SE, then ran to a parked car where a man and woman were sitting and repeatedly stabbed the woman, police said. When Dupree refused to stop, Taffe fired "several" shots, said a police spokesman. Dupree was pronounced dead at the scene.

The first woman fled, police say, and the second was taken to Greater Southeast Community Hospital, where she is in serious but stable condition. The man in the car was not injured.

Taffe, a 15-year-veteran has been placed on leave with pay pending an investigation.
