Thomas C. Lyle, 21, an inmate of the D.C. Jail who had been in a coma said he tried to hang himself early July 4 in the jail's infirmary, died yesterday at D.C. General Hospital.

Lyle, who lived on Tuckerman Street NW, was arrested June 30 on a rape charge, and had been classified as a suicide risk by a jail psychologist who ordered him placed under a suicide watch in the jail's infirmary.

Jail officials said Lyle's death was caused in part by overcrowding at the jail, whose population is well over capacity. Jail Inmate in Coma Dies
