Vienna officials said a new "flexible-price" Alcoholic Beverage Commission store will open for business at 436 E. Maple Ave. at noon on Aug. 4 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local dignitaries.

Town spokesman Marie Kisner said the store is "large and will be one of 10 stores in Northern Virginia where prices will be lower than other ABC stores across the state, "in an effort to make it more competitive with liquor stores in Washington, D.C."

The ABC closed down a smaller store in Vienna a year ago, touching off a local effort to bring an ABC facility back into town. Kisner said Vienna Mayor Charles A. Robinson Jr., Virginia Delegate Dorothy McDiarmid and Virginia State Sen. Clive DuVal were instrumental in getting a new "self-service" ABC store for Vienna and are expected to be among the group that will celebrate the opening.

Vienna also will be host this week of the Southeast 16-Year-Old Regional Babe Ruth Tournament in which top Babe Ruth baseball teams from seven Southern states will compete for the Southeast championship.

Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) and Rep. Frank Wolf (R-Va.) will welcome the teams and attend the opening ceremony Aug. 5. The tournament will be held at Waters Field on Cherry Street and will be televised locally over Channel 56. Cherry Street will be closed between the Community Center and Center Street the night of Aug. 5.
