The federal government and area jurisdictions are observing the Labor Day holiday today.

All federal offices are closed. In Maryland and Virginia, state and county government offices are closed, as are government offices in the District.

There will be no mail delivery, except express and special delivery. All post offices, banks and courts are closed.

Metro buses are running today on a Sunday schedule, but Metrorail is operating on an extended Saturday schedule from 8 a.m. to midnight, and there will be extra service from the Stadium-Armory station for persons leaving the Redskins game at RFK Stadium. Off-peak fares are in effect today. The Silver Spring Ride-On service is operating on a Sunday schedule, while the Gaithersburg Ride-On is not operating.

All area schools are closed.

Liquor stores are closed in Virginia and Montgomery County, but most in the District and Prince George's County are open.

Area libraries are closed today.

In the District, Supercan trash collections will be made one day late this week, while regular Monday trash collections will be made tomorrow, and Tuesday trash collections will be made Wednesday. The rest of the week will be as scheduled. In Montgomery and Prince George's counties there will be no trash pickup today. In Fairfax and Arlington counties trash collections will be made on schedule. In Alexandria trash collections will be one day late. In Falls Church regular Monday trash collections will be made tomorrow, and Tuesday's collections will be made Wednesday, with the rest of the week on schedule.

Parking meter payments are not required today in the District; enforcement of traffic regulations will vary in other jurisdictions.
