A motorist from Brooklyn was killed Monday night when he was struck by three cars as he attempted to cross the Capitol Beltway near I-95 to retrieve a tire that had come loose from his car.

Maryland State Police said that the car driven by Johnie Leon Glaspie, 43, broke down at about 10:30 p.m. and he left his automobile to pick up the tire.

They said that the impact from the first car that struck Glaspie hurled him 177 feet into the paths of the other two vehicles.

Police said that the driver of the first car to hit Glaspie, Gary Oden, 20, of 13111 Greenmount Ave., Beltsville, has been charged with automobile manslaughter, speeding, and driving while intoxicated.
