Two deaths this week have raised to 50 the number of persons killed in the District this year in traffic accidents, D.C. police reported yesterday.

A six-car collision on New York Avenue NE during rush hour Tuesday evening resulted in the death of a Hyattsville woman, and a Chevy Chase man was killed Monday night when struck by a hit-and-run vehicle as he attempted to cross Wisconsin Avenue at Harrison Street NW, police said.

Peggy Ann Phillips of 4729 68th Place, Hyattsville, died at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to police, about 2 1/2 hours after the car she was driving was struck head-on in the 600 block of New York Avenue NE.

Police said Ryland Johnson, 28, of 1106 Eastern Ave. NE, was charged with driving at an unreasonable rate of speed and changing lanes without caution in connection with the accident. He was listed in serious condition last night at the Washington Hospital Center with possible internal injuries.

The other incident occurred about 10 p.m. Monday when Santiago Chaves, 47, of 5203 Saratoga Ave., was struck and fatally injured as he crossed Wisconsin Avenue NW in the 5100 block, police said.

Police said they would like to talk with anyone who might have witnessed the accident. Investigators can be reached at 727-4443.

At this time last year, there had been 53 traffic fatalities in the District, police said.
