Several high school seniors in suburban Maryland are among the 1,500 semifinalists in the recent National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students.

They entered the competition last fall when more than 73,000 black students took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and requested consideration in the Achievement Program.
