The senior left winger led Churchill's field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over B-CC for the Class AA, Region I championship and into this week's state semifinals. Hummon scored two goals on corner shots and assisted on another score.
One of the corner shots Churchill Coach Mary Jobe called a "scoop goal."
"Gretchen shot the ball and the goalie blocked it from the right side of the cage. As the ball came away, Hummon got her stick under the ball and threw it about nine feet into the air. When it came down, she scooped it into the left side of the cage," explained Jobe. "It takes skill to do it, and Gretchen definitely has the skill. I've been wanting her to do it all season."
Hummon was less impressed with her achievement.
"I had no idea where that ball came from," Hummon said with a laugh. "It came back at me, and I sort of flicked it into the cage. (Coach Jobe) was really excited about that shot -- she likes that kind of thing."
Although Hummon had never played field hockey before she came out for the Bulldog team as a sophomore, she learned quickly and earned a starting spot her first year
