It was an unusual scene at Stan's lounge on Vermont Avenue yesterday. As regulars arrived for their noontime refueling with toys in their arms, Linda Brochette, a night bartender doing extra duty as the day hostess, directed them to the table where hors d'oeuvres ordinarily are served.

There, owner Stan Gimble had set up a small Christmas tree and primed the pump, so to speak, for the annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign.

Stan and wife Florence had bought several toys to provide a start. The customers piled more toys for the underprivileged atop those.

For example, Frieda Wagner, one of the customers, brought in two small Redskins footballs, a robot toy and a doll stroller.

The decision to have Stan's serve as a Toys for Tots collection point, and this item itself, were inspired -- in the hope, admittedly, of inspiring more donations -- by a Washington lawyer, Herbert N. Harmon, a gung-ho lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves who is second vice president of the national reserves' association.

There are too many collection points to list in this item, but if you want to give -- all toys should be unwrapped -- call 433-3612. Or take them on Dec. 19 to any area Hyatt hotel.
