George Tillotson Bird, 68, the president of Bird Engineering-Research Associates Inc. in Vienna, which he founded in 1960, died of a heart ailment Dec. 8 at Fairfax Hospital.

Mr. Bird, who lived in Vienna, was born in Sherman, N.Y., and raised in Texas. He graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in electrical engineering. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces. During the Korean conflict, he was recalled to active duty from the Air Force Reserves.

He moved to the Washington area in 1953 and worked for an engineering firm before starting his own company. Bird Engineering-Research specializes in reliability studies and has done much work for the government, including the space program.

Mr. Bird was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Survivors include his wife, Katie McClure Bird, to whom he was married for 43 years, of Vienna; three children, Carolyn Stevens of Florence, Mont., Evelyn Bird-Greenberg of Roxton, Tex., and George T. Bird Jr. of Vienna; two brothers, Sherman, of Donna, Tex., and Richard, of Houston; three sisters, Helen Osborne of Windsor, N.Y., Marion Armstrong of Port Isabelle, Tex., and Joyce McMullin of Houston, and three grandchildren.
