The University of Virginia's Summer Foreign Language Institute will offer a nine-week total immersion program in French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish June 12 through Aug. 8.
Applications are due by April 15.
The institute grants 12 units, or the equivalent of two years, of college language credit for the live-in summer program.
The immersion approach includes daily language classes, drills and pronunciation work in the school's language lab, along with organized social and cultural activities conducted in the language being studied.
Students of each language are housed together and students' speech is limited to the foreign language whenever possible.
The program is open to college students, adults and high school students who have finished their junior year. Each language class begins at the introductory level.
Tuition is $660 for Virginians and $1,560 for non-Virginians. Room and board is $830 for both in-state and out-of-state students. In addition, there are fees of $82 and an estimated cost of $50 for books and supplies.
