A 29-year-old woman was shot in the head and seriously wounded yesterday during a robbery of the dry cleaning business she operates with her husband in Northeast Washington, D.C. police said.
They said Oki Kim of the 3300 block of Southgate Drive in Alexandria, was shot about 5:30 p.m. after an armed man entered Aaron's Cleaners, 1813 Benning Rd. NE, asked for cash and ordered Kim, a store employe and a customer to lie on the floor. Kim was listed in stable condition last night at D.C. General Hospital.
Police said the robbery and shooting, the latest in a series of attacks on Korean business owners in the District, did not appear to be racially motivated.
Police Det. Rennie Lee of the robbery squad said the woman's husband, Young Kim, told police that he and his wife had no apparent trouble in the community and had been "friendly with all their customers."
Several residents of the area said they knew the Kims, whom they said were considered a part of the community.
Lee said Young Kim told police that he was in the basement of the store when he heard a man arguing with his wife and the two others.
Moments after the three were ordered to lie on the floor, the detective said, Young Kim heard a shot fired.
The gunman fled with money from the customer and the store's cash register, Lee said. No arrests have been made.
