Nine persons were injured yesterday morning on East West Highway in Silver Spring when a dump truck collided with a Metrobus and overturned on two cars, Montgomery County police reported.

They charged the bus driver, Jessie Crawford, 43, of Rockville, with running a red light.

Crawford received a broken leg in the accident, police said, while five of his passengers and the car and truck drivers received minor injuries. All were treated at Holy Cross Hospital and released.

Police spokesman Harry Geehreng said the bus, on its way between Montgomery Mall and Silver Spring, was headed east on East West Highway when it ran a red light at Grubb Road about 7 a.m.

He said the bus struck the dump truck, which was headed north on Grubb Road. The impact knocked over the dump truck, which landed on the two cars. Rush-hour traffic on East West Highway was blocked for an hour as the wreckage was cleared.

Metro spokeswoman Marilyn Dicus said Metro will conduct its own investigation to determine what action, if any, should be taken against the driver. She said bus drivers charged with serious moving violations are not allowed to resume their duties until investigations are completed.
