The auditions are open to beginning, intermediate and advanced students in the District, suburban Maryland and Virginia. No adult scholarships will be awarded except in the area of vocal study.

Classical and jazz students will be considered in strings, winds, brass, harp, percussion and piano, as well as composition, conducting and voice.

Tuesday is the application deadline. For information, call 337-2227. Photo Exhibit A competition to send a photographic exhibition to Peking is being sponsored by the D.C. government and the U.S.-China Capital Cities Friendship Council.

The exhibit is to open Oct 8 in Peking and present diverse images of local, federal and everyday life in the District of Columbia. An exhibit from Peking was shown in December at the Washington Convention Center.

Photos may be submitted by any Washington area photographer. There is a $10 entry fee, to cover up to three photographs per entrant. Prizes are to be awarded in the categories of neighborhoods, events, people and buildings.

May 30 is the deadline to submit works. Entries must be postmarked by May 25 or hand-delivered to the National Geographic Society, 16th Street entrance, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. May 30. For information, call the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities at 724-5613.
