A 17-year-old Hyattsville man upset over losing his job and his girlfriend on the same day shot and killed himself yesterday afternoon after wounding a man, Prince George's County police said.

Cmdr. Robert A. Phillips of the Police Special Operations Division said that about 40 officers arrived at 7007 Hillview Ter. around 3 p.m. expecting to find the man barricaded in an apartment.

Phillips said the dead man earlier had argued with the girlfriend, who was not identified, and then shot the other man in the arm with a shotgun before fleeing into the apartment building.

For more than an hour, police negotiators telephoned the apartment, but the man did not answer. Finally, using a periscope, the officers were able to see the man sitting on the sofa, apparently dead from a shotgun wound.

Few details were immediately available, but Phillips said the wounded man was apparently the girl's new boyfriend.

The disturbance created crowds of onlookers at the apartment complex, which is near Prince George's Plaza shopping center.

"I was hanging around outside," said Shannon Watson, a resident of the complex, "when all of a sudden something went boom. I saw a man holding his shoulder, bleeding, running out of the apartment. I heard a girl scream, 'Darrell.' "

Phillips said the wounded man was taken to Prince George's Community Hospital and that his wounds were not life-threatening.
