The D.C. Department of Recreation and the Metropolitan Police Boys Clubs will offer a variety of programs for local residents this summer. Many of these programs are free to the public.

The summer track schedule will begin next week with the ARCO/Jesse Owens qualifying meet at Gallaudet College at 2 p.m. This is the second year the Department of Recreation has sponsored the meet.

On June 22, the department will have tryouts for the Youth Games track and field team at Spingarn High School at 10 a.m. Tryouts for the Hershey National Track and Field Youth program will be on June 30 at Gallaudet College at 2.

Youth games tryouts in five other sports will be held. Basketball (boys and girls) will be held at various locations within the city. Bowling will be June 20-24 at the Alexandria Bowling Center.

Swimming tryouts will be at the Capitol East Natatorium on June 26 at 9 a.m. Tennis will be at the Takoma Recreation Center June 24-28 at 9 a.m.

The Mayor's Cup invitational boxing tournament is set July 11-13 at Howard University's Burr Gymnasium. It will have six visiting teams of 12 boxers each, along with a local team.

Also planned is a summer senior high baseball tournament for Interhigh and Metro Conference teams at Turkey Thicket. The Police Boys Club will sponsor Little League baseball competition again this year.

Girls softball will start play June 24 and basketball (both boys and girls) will start July 22. The junior boys and girls golf league will have tournament play on Aug. 7.

Each public swimming pool will be represented this summer by a "Miss Aquacade." The Recreatioin Department will crown the winners on July 27.
