Prince George's County police announced yesterday that a Hyattsville man arrested last month has been charged with two counts of rape and faces a grand jury hearing next week on charges related to 14 other rape cases.
The rape cases have occurred throughout the county since 1983, according to police spokesman Bruce Gentile.
Gentile said that the suspect, Welford Raymond Payne, 25, is being held at the Detention Center in Upper Marlboro without bond.
Payne was arrested on June 7 at Southern Maryland Hospital in Clinton, Gentile said. He was charged at that time with assault and the attempted rape of a Beltsville woman.
According to police reports, a man posing as a maintenance worker gained entry into the woman's apartment earlier that day. Once inside, he attacked the woman with a knife, but then let her use the bathroom. She returned with a straight razor and during a struggle, the woman cut her assailant's neck.
Payne came to the hospital seeking treatment of a cut, and police arrested him, Gentile said.
"After police made the arrest, they realized that this man fit the description of the man being sought in connection with several attacks," Gentile said.
