A Prince George's County woman was sentenced yesterday to life plus 15 years in prison for attempting to kill her son after he accused her of stealing $11,000 from his bank account while he was serving overseas in the Army.
Racheal Payne, 45, was convicted June 13 in Prince George's County Circuit Court of assault with intent to murder Charles G. Payne, 23, among other charges. She was being held without bond at the County Detention Center at the time of her sentencing.
During her trial last month, the Seat Pleasant woman first testified that she accidentally shot her son Oct. 22 after he confronted her about money he had sent home to be put in his account while he was stationed in West Germany.
Later, under cross-examination, Racheal Payne told the jury that she shot her son, who was an Army medic, in self-defense after he came at her with a five-foot-long drainage pipe.
Defense attorney Joseph Finleyson, whose motion for a new trial was denied yesterday, said that he will file another motion to have the sentence reconsidered and that he will also appeal the conviction. Assistant State's Attorney Thomas A. McManus said that he was "satisfied with the sentence."
