The Dumfries Town Council this week may consider a proposed ordinance that will require all homeowners, landlords and tenants to share responsibility for the installation and maintenance of smoke detectors in every residence. According to Vice Mayor Marjorie Davis the ordinance, which may be modeled on the county's fire code, has full council support. "I own a rental property in town myself," Davis said. "As soon as the council started discussing this issue, I went out and bought smoke detectors for it." There has been no unusual number of fires in the town to prompt the action. "We just want to take all precautions," she said.
The Town Council is still screening candidates to fill the seat of Mickey Willard, who resigned recently to attend night classes for the ministry. In the past, Davis said, the losing candidate with the most votes in the previous election has often been appointed to fill a vacancy. "But this year some of those who lost the election simply lost interest in town government, too. Now they want the job. We don't feel they have the town at heart," she said. The council has posted a notice outside the town hall requesting candidates to apply. So far, Davis said, three persons have shown an interest.
