A 25-year-old Herndon man has been charged with malicious wounding in a fight that erupted over the weekend in a holding cell at the Loudoun County jail in which a man was seriously injured, a sheriff's department official said yesterday.
David R. Crocker, of 2200 Jensen Place, was charged with the felony on Sunday and released from the Adult Detention Center in Leesburg on $2,500 bond, according to Sgt. Terry McCracken of the Loudoun County Sheriff's Department.
Crocker was first arrested early Sunday on a misdemeanor charge of being drunk in public and was placed in a holding cell, McCracken said. He said one of Crocker's eight cell mates, David L. Campbell, 28, of Leesburg, who had been arrested on charges of driving under the influence and driving without a license, apparently asked Crocker for a cigarette and the fight broke out.
Campbell, who was being treated yesterday at Loudoun Memorial Hospital for a punctured lung and fractured ribs, claims it was a long time before anyone came to his assistance. "I know I was on the floor a good 10 minutes," he said.
McCracken said an investigation was conducted and that help came in a matter of minutes. He said a deputy sheriff heard shouting and ran for help.
