Roadsign Crackdown Under Way
Montgomery County officials cracking down on illegal roadside signs say they have issued 82 civil citations since August against builders and others who posted small signs advertising such things as new subdivisions and garage sales.
Officials said the signs are rarely collected, litter the roadside and can obstruct drivers' views at intersections.
Carl I. Sivertsen, zoning supervisor in the county's department of environmental protection, said most of the illegal signs are put up by builders. The citations carry maximum fines of $250. Potomac Library to Be Dedicated
County Executive Charles W. Gilchrist and Council President Michael Gudis will dedicate Potomac's new $2.2 million public library Sunday at a grand opening that will include a performance by Penny Theatre Presentations.
The library, one of 19 branches in the county system, has 45,000 volumes, 150 periodicals, a reference collection, a study room and two public meeting rooms.
The 16,400-square-foot, contemporary brick building, designed by Kamstra, Dickerson Associates, has a copper roof and is set slightly into the ground for better energy conservation.
The 3 p.m. dedication ceremony, open to the public, will be held at the library at 10101 Glenolden Dr. Montgomery Sets Up Exhibit
If you've got it, why not flaunt it?
That theme seems as good as any to describe Montgomery County's exhibit at Biotech 85, an international conference of biotechnological companies held this week at the D.C. Convention Center.
Montgomery was the only county in the country to set up an exhibit at the three-day international conference.
The exhibit touted the county's high quality of life and drew particular attention to the 270-acre Life Sciences Center just off I-270 in Rockville.
The center, anchored by the 224-bed Shady Grove Adventist Hospital, includes such corporate tenants as Otsuka Pharmaceutical, the first Japanese company of its type to invest in the U.S., and Johns Hopkins University, which is developing a 37-acre campus specializing in science and technology.
