For those who like to give gifts and have the proceeds used to benefit people in need, the "Alexandria 1986" calendar is worth a look this holiday season.
The calendar is composed of 13 scenes of historic Old Town streets rendered in black and white, pen and ink drawnings by artist Todd Healy of Alexandria.
The calendar is presented by the Senior Citizens Employment Services of Alexandria Inc. and is sponsored by several local businesses and large companies. Proceeds from the calendar sales are used by the nonprofit agency to extend benefits to those senior citizens in need.
The organization aids senior citizens in several ways. It helps those who cannot meet their utility bills through the Fuel Relief Program and provides lunches through the Senior Nutrition Program. It also gives advice on property taxes and rent relief.
In addition, the organization provides a subsidized taxi service for senior citizens who cannot drive to their medical appointments and grocery shopping. It also helps senior citizens find temporary, seasonal and full-time employment and issues Senior Citizens discount cards and Metro discount cards.
Mary Ann Ormes, director of the agency, told of two recent cases in which the agency was able to help. In one instance, the agency helped a man whose wife had had a stroke and was unable to stay at home by herself. The agency helped the man find someone to take care of his wife, enabling him to keep his job, and also assisted him in paying for the companion.
In a second case, the agency helped a professional woman over 60, who had been without a job for four months, redo her resume and gave her the support she needed to go out and sell herself to possible employers.
Healy, a native Virginian, has been drawing scenes of Old Town since 1976 when he was commissioned by a local gallery to do a series of Old Town prints. This is the fourth year he has done the calendar.
Last year the sale of the calendar brought in over $5,000 for the Senior Citizens Employment Services of Alexandria. The 1985 calendars were sold out by Christmas. The agency has ordered 4,800 calendars for 1986.
The calendar may be purchased at several stores in the Old Town area of Alexandria. For places to buy the calendars, call 836-4414. Calendars can be bought at the agency's office, 121 N. St. Asaph St.
The cost of the calendar remains at $5 and is tax-deductible.
