Former Gaithersburg mayor Harold C. Morris is heading a drive to raise $30,000 to expand the city's Christmas street lighting program in the Olde Towne business district during the holiday season.

Morris, who raised $14,000 during a similar effort six years ago, said that this year's goal is to buy upwards of 80 seven-foot Christmas candles to light all the streets in Olde Towne, including such previously unlit streets as North Summit Avenue and Rte. 355.

The $30,000 will also help pay for installation and wiring.

A large campaign "barometer" will be installed in a central location in Olde Towne to gauge the amount of contributions, Morris said. The names of major contributors will be posted on an adjoining billboard.

The local chamber of commerce sponsored the street-lighting project until 1978, when it decided to drop the effort because of the cost. Morris revived the project a year later.

Contributions can be sent to the Christmas Lighting Fund, Harold C.
