Children's Librarian Retiring
After almost 16 years of service Stella Reed is retiring as the children's librarian at the Alexandria Library's Duncan Branch. Reed was involved in all aspects of the children's program, including crafts, movies and story time. She was presented with an engraved pewter cup, and a plaque and certificate of appreciation. Many of her former story time children attended the open house and farewell party held at the branch. Cheerleaders Take First Place
The cheerleading team from Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center in Alexandria won first place in the Alexandria Department of Recreation's fifth annual competition for girls from 9 to 14 years of age. Taking home the trophy were Coach Tanya Banks, Sahron Washington, Tracy Bland, Tanika Caple, Kaish Caple, Latanya Giles, Verdon Lewis, Tamigny Lewis, Kristal Bell, Candy Wigglesworth, Tanika Harris, Wanda Woodward, and mascot Iyona Hawkins. Three T.C. Williams High School students, members of the Model United Nations Club, were selected for special honors at a YMCA-sponsored conference in Hershey, Pa. Hardin Lang, a sophomore, was chosen to attend a five-day national YMCA leadership conference this summer in North Carolina; senior Sarah Morse was named one of 12 alternates to that conference, and Marieka Yoder, a junior, will serve on an advisory YMCA body called the United Nations Secretariat that will help plan next year's conference. Joel Kaplan, the Club adviser, noted that T.C. Williams' performance was exceptional, since there were more than 900 students at the conference. New Army Official Sworn In
Robert K. Dawson of Central Avenue was recently sworn in as assistant secretary of the Army for civil works in a ceremony at the Pentagon. The oath of office was administered by Sen. Howell Heflin (D-Ala.), former chief justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama, Dawson's home state. Dawson will oversee the civil works program of the Corps of Engineers. Soccer Association Officers
The Alexandria Soccer Association elected the following officers for 1986: Mike Gemmell, president; Jim Miller, executive vice president; Dick Scully, secretary; Larry Mucha, treasurer, and Dave Dawes, registrar. Elected to the board of directors were Charlie Beach, Gudron Callahan, Ford Chinworth, Tom Fitzgerald, Kathy Jenkins, Mike Mallon, Mike Montgomery, Steve Sharp, Mistie Shaw and Vassil Yanco. The Alexandria Soccer Association is a volunteer organization that includes more than 1,500 soccer players, aged 6 to 16.
