Virginia Beach set a one-day record for drunk driving cases after police jammed the dockets to dramatize opposition to judicial leniency toward drunk drivers.
About 40 of the 85 people charged in General District Court with driving under the influence were convicted by Judge R. Stanley Hudgins. One charge was dismissed, two were reduced to reckless driving, and most of the other cases were continued.
Another 19 cases were handled by Traffic Court B. The total of 104 cases set a one-day record. add d P.G. Man in Custody After Standoff
A 37-year-old Oxon Hill man was taken into custody by Prince George's County sheriff's deputies late last night after a 10-hour standoff ended when deputies fired tear gas into his apartment where he had barricaded himself after officials tried to evict him.
Residents of the 12-unit garden apartment building in the 2100 block of Alice Avenue were evacuated about 10 a.m. yesterday after deputies were confronted by a man with a .32-caliber automatic weapon.
After firing tear gas into the third-floor apartment about 11:45 last night, deputies entered and found an armed man hiding in a bedroom closet. They said the man grabbed an officer's service revolver during a struggle, causing it to discharge once, hitting the wall.
The man, who police said suffered a laceration to his head in the scuffle, was being treated late last night at Prince George's County Hospital. No charges had been filed as of late last night, police said, and no other injuries were reported.
