Prince George's County Executive Parris Glendening has sent a bill to the County Council to authorize matching funds of up to $20,000 for contributions to the Prince George's Philharmonic Orchestra.
The matching fund program would continue until June 1. The orchestra will kick off its fund-raising tomorrow.
Founded in 1977, the 80-member orchestra includes a number of professional musicians who perform with other ensembles in the area. For information about making a contribution call 699-2540.
Bowie State College has set up a scholarship and fellowship fund in honor of Christa McAuliffe, one of seven astronauts killed Jan. 28 in the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. McAuliffe received a master's degree in teacher education from Bowie State in 1978.
The fund will provide assistance to graduate and undergraduate students in teacher education who have cumulative grade point averages of at least 3.25. Undergraduates may apply at the end of their sophomore year; graduate students may apply after completion of 12 graduate credits at Bowie State. The application must include a 500-word statement about the need for excellence in education.
The grants will be awarded beginning in the fall of 1987. Contributions may be sent to the BSC Foundation/McAuliffe Fund, Bowie State College, Bowie 20715. For more information call 464-3210.
The Associations of the U.S. Army of Bowie State College and Howard University are sponsoring a 10-kilometer race to benefit the Prince George's County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
It will begin at 9 a.m. April 5 at Bowie State College. Preregistration is $5, and registration on the day of the race is $7.
