The Fairfax County Human Rights Commission is accepting nominations for its ninth annual Human Rights Award, which will recognize two individuals and one organization for outstanding accomplishments in the area of human rights in Fairfax County in 1985. The 1985 award recipients, as well as previous years' recipients, will be honored at a banquet in May.
The deadline for submitting nominations is March 15. Nominees will be selected on the basis of their contributions toward the achievement of equality in Fairfax County, and specifically the elimination of discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, religion, national origin, marital status, age, handicap or use of adaptive devices in the areas of housing, public accomodations, employment, county services, education and credit facilities. Recipients of the 1984 Human Rights Award were Abe and Lilyan Spero, Del. Vincent F. Callahan Jr., and the Computer Sciences Corporation, Systems Division.

*The Alexandria Commission on the Status of Women will sponsor its sixth annual Woman to Woman Awards Banquet on Friday, April 4. The banquet will be held to raise funds for the Alexandria Battered Women's Shelter and to honor Alexandria women who have made substantial contributions to the community.

*Fairfax County residents 55 years or older may have their income tax questions answered for no charge during a workshop at Sleepy Hollow Senior Center, 3330 Holloman Road, Falls Church at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11. *A free shorthand and typing pretest and counseling session will be held March 12 at Marshall High School, 7731 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church, for anyone wanting to determine her or his level of skill.
The typing session, which will begin at 7:30 p.m., will include a timed writing test or discussion with a counselor. At 8 p.m. the shorthand session will begin. Students will take dictation or discuss specific needs with a counselor, and will then be given the opportunity to sign up for Fairfax County Adult Education classes that will start in March and April.
