District authorities have asked a D.C. Superior Court to revoke the city's legal authority over an 8-year-old girl who is in critical condition at D.C. General Hospital. The girl, Maria Marshall, was injured seriously in a fire Sunday at the foster care home where she had been living for two years.

Audrey Rowe, D.C. commissioner of social services, said the city wants the girl's mother to have the responsibility for making any decision regarding the life support efforts that are keeping the girl alive.

A scheduled hearing on the case was postponed yesterday, department spokesman Charles Seigel said, when the mother raised questions about whether she wanted the city's emergency shelter order revoked.

Also yesterday, funerals were held for two of the other victims of the fire, 5-month-old twins Stephanie and Steven Edwards. Their parents, Shirtia Edwards and Steven Branch, said they plan to sue the city for the loss of their children.
