Joanne DeAusen, 13, of St. Mary's School in Rockville, and Isabel Legarda, 13, of the Country Day School of the Sacred Heart, Stone Ridge, in Bethesda, were winners of the annual scholarship examination at Connelly School of the Holy Child in Potomac. Both will receive full scholarships for their outstanding performance on the examination. DeAusen is a First Honors student with a special interest in math. She ranked with distinction in the Johns Hopkins Talent Search in math and placed first in her school's science fair. Her parents are Jose and Maria DeAusen of Potomac. In addition to her scholastic accomplishments, for the past two summers Legarda has been a student at the Joffrey Ballet School scholarship class. She is the daughter of Benito and Angelita Legarda of Bethesda. Professor Wins Grant

Dr. Thomas Hassell, associate professor of periodontics and anatomy at the University of Maryland Dental School, has been awarded a five-year, $1 million grant from the National Institute of Dental Research to study the causes of gum disease. Hassell, of Silver Spring, holds a dental degree from Indiana University and a PhD. from the University of Washington. He joined the University of Maryland Dental School faculty early in 1983.
