A sock hop scheduled for May 16 as part the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Heritage Celebration and mentioned in the May 1 Maryland Weekly has been canceled.

Some of the events planned in Bethesda during May:

May 4 -- Heritage Celebration Parade. Noon to 3 p.m. Parade will begin at Bethesda Elementary School, 5011 Moorland La.

May 4 -- Bicycle Sprint Races. 4 p.m. Anyone over age 8 is eligible to enter. On-site registration at Bethesda Elementary.

May 7 -- Opening of Bethesda Metro Center Plaza. Noon. Kickoff of the "Meet Me on the Plaza" series; free performances to be held on Wednesdays and Fridays at the Bethesda Metro Station.

May 16 -- 1950s Sock Hop. 8 to 11 p.m. Bethesda Recreation Center, 4506 Walsh St.

May 17 -- Bethesda Naval Hospital Open House. 9 a.m. to noon. Includes health fair and unveiling of hospital plans drawn by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, which have been sealed in a hospital vault.

May 17 -- Tours of the National Institutes of Health. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

May 18 -- Dedication ceremony of rock from Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. 3 p.m. Israeli Ambassador Meir Rosenne and County Executive Charles W. Gilchrist will take part in the presentation at the Bethesda Metro Plaza. The ceremony will be followed by an Israeli dance performance.

May 18 -- Children's Day. Noon to 5 p.m. Performances and activities for children aged 3 to 12 at Glen Echo Park.
