A 25-year-old motorcyclist, driving at speeds of up to 125 miles per hour, eluded state and county police for about an hour last night in a chase that began in southern Fairfax County, wound north around the District, and ended in Prince George's County, authorities said.

Fairfax County police said the Fairfax resident, whose name was not released, was spotted speeding about one-half mile south of Burke Lake and was pursued by county police at about 11 p.m.

The man, riding an '83 Honda Magnum, headed north and was able to give county officers the slip just before reaching the Cabin John Bridge, they said. Maryland State Police were notified and picked up the trail on the inner loop of the Beltway in the College Park area.

At least six state police cruisers joined the chase, police said, aided by Prince George's County Police and a state police helicopter. They said the man left the Beltway at Indian Head Highway, continued north on Allentown Road and was apprehended near Temple Hills Road in Padgett's Corner.

No injuries were reported in the chase, and the man was charged with excessive speed, speeding to elude, careless driving and other traffic offenses by the Maryland State Police. Fairfax County charges against the man are pending, county police said.
