Three Reston teen-agers have been charged with rape and abduction in the sexual assault of a 12-year-old girl at a Reston community pool Sunday night, Fairfax County police said yesterday.

The girl had scaled a 6-foot chain-link fence around the Dogwood Swimming Pool after closing hours about 10 p.m. Sunday, according to police spokesman Warren Carmichael. About a dozen youths, some of whom the girl reportedly knew, also scaled the fence to get into the pool, he said.

A 16-year-old youth allegedly raped the girl, while a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old allegedly held her by the arms in the shallow end of the pool, Carmichael said. The girl apparently knew at least one of her attackers by sight, he said.

"We believe some of the members of the group were looking on," Carmichael said. Police are continuing their investigation, he said.

The youths fled when a group of people walking by the pool heard the commotion, Carmichael said.

The girl ran home and told her parents about the attack, according to Carmichael.

The three youths were arrested Monday evening on one count each of rape and abduction and held at the Juvenile Detention Center in Fairfax City, he said.

Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney Robert F. Horan Jr. said yesterday he might seek to have at least one youth tried as an adult.

The 20-yard, L-shaped pool at Glade and Green Range drives near the Dogwood Elementary School is one of 15 pools operated by the Reston Homeowners Association.
