The D.C. Board of Elections has relocated 10 city polling places to comply with a law requiring that voting locations be accessible to the elderly and handicapped.

A survey of 137 polling locations in the District found only 11 of the sites accessible when the requirement, Public Law 98-435, went into effect in January, according to Emmett H. Fremaux Jr., the director of the elections board.

By September, however, the board expects that 86 sites will be made accessible through construction of building ramps at 39 locations, curb cuts at 46 sites and the 10 relocations, he said. The required construction work, funded from the Department of Public Works' capital improvements budget, has totaled $230,000 so far.

Most of the remaining sites will be made accessible next year. Some others can be brought into compliance by use of an alternate entrance, an election board official said.

As a result of the accessibility law, each polling place in the District is to provide parking spaces designated for the handicapped, wheelchair accessible voting booths, large-print voting instructions and magnifying glasses for persons with impaired vision.
