Spend the Fourth with a band that's almost as old as America itself -- The United States Marine Band. The band will present a program of American music at a special Independence Day celebration on July 4 at the Filene Center, Wolf Trap Farm Park, from 1 to 4 p.m. Featured ensembles will be The Marine Band itself, the Marine Dance Band, the Marine Dixieland Band and the Marine Orchestra.

The Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will sponsor the United States' 210th and Alexandria's 237th birthday celebration on Saturday, July 5, from 11 a.m. until dark at Jones Point Park, South Royal Street (under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge).

Guest emcee for the evening program is Davis Haines of WAVA Radio. Live entertainment will be provided throughout the day by the Blind, a rock band, at noon; D.C. Authority, a big band, at 1 p.m.; Ronald McDonald at 2 p.m.; the James Brothers, a country band, at 3 p.m.; Short Circuits, a special children's band, at 4 p.m.; folksinger John Michaels at 5 p.m., and the Jazz Masters at 6:45 p.m.

Other events will be the ceremonial cutting of the birthday cake by Mayor James P. Moran Jr. at 7:30 p.m. and a concert by the United States Army Blues Band at 8:30 p.m. The grand finale fireworks display will begin at dark.

The Fairfax County Park Authority and the Town of Vienna invite you to the grand opening of Peterson Lane Park, 575 Malcolm Rd., Vienna, on Sunday, June 29, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The dedication ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. There will be sports contests, door prizes, a balloon launch and refreshments. -- Dianne Saenz
