Prince George's County police shot and wounded a Capitol Heights man early yesterday when he allegedly pointed a gun at officers who were arresting him in the shooting death of his girlfriend, police said.
Maurice Justin White, 27, of 5314 Cumberland St., who was shot in the left leg, was charged with first-degree murder in the death of Barbara Ann Parker, 33, of 1653 Tulip Ave., Forestville, police said. He was listed in good condition yesterday.
According to police spokesman Cpl. Bruce Gentile, officers were called to a reported shooting at Parker's town house at 12:50 a.m. yesterday. When officers arrived, Gentile said, they found Parker on a bedroom floor with a gunshot wound to the chest.
A few minutes later, police saw a man armed with a gun running through the parking lot of the Triangle Market, 1410 Ritchie Rd., about a block away, Gentile said. The officers ordered the man to halt, Gentile said, but the man pointed the gun at them and said, "You will have to kill me. I'm not going back to jail."
Sgt. Richard Osborne then fired a single shot at the man, hitting him the left leg, Gentile said. Osborne, a 16-year-veteran of the force, was placed on routine administrative leave pending an investigation of the incident, Gentile said.
