Arlington County police are continuing their investigation into the abduction of an infant reportedly kidnaped by a woman posing as an Arlington Hospital employe.
"We're checking every lead that comes through," said Sgt. James M. Schweitzer, head of the department's juvenile division, which is involved because the baby is a newborn.
Jennifer Renee Smith was 2 days old Thursday when a woman dressed in hospital garb entered the Arlington Hospital room of the baby's mother, Loreli Smith, 23, about 4:30 p.m. and told her the baby needed to go to the lab for "a routine blood analysis," Smith said.
When the nurse did not return with the child and hospital personnel learned that a baby undergoing tests in the lab was not Jennifer Smith, police were called.
Police were given conflicting information on how the woman who posed as a hospital employe was dressed. Smith said the woman wore a blue hospital garment with a blue and green smock over it. Smith's roommate on the maternity ward told police the woman wore a white lab coat over a white dress with yellow ruffles.
Schweitzer said that the woman, described as in her mid- to late-thirties with her hair pulled back in a ponytail or bun, may have discarded the hospital garb. When last seen, the baby was in a white blanket with pink and blue stripes.
Schweitzer said police want anyone who has any information to call the juvenile division at 284-5846 until 10 p.m., and 558-2922 after 10 p.m.
